As part of its staffing reallocation plan, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and Fire Chief Tiffany Green announced that Prince George’s County will hire 150 new firefighters in 2025.
The news comes as County Fire/EMS officials say they are currently operating 251 career firefighters short of a full staff. The vacancies are expected to cost taxpayers over $30 million in overtime expenses this year.
Chief Green will be pulling career firefighters from their current stations and relocating them in an attempt to fight fatigue and burnout.
Firefighters from Greenbelt, Berwyn Heights and College Park have signed on to a motion for a restraining order asking a judge to halt the transfers, citing that the plan would result in longer response times.
The three cities have issued a joint statement asking for the formation of a task force to come up with a staffing plan that provides enhanced support and incentives for volunteer firefighters.
Chief Greens says the relocations are meant to keep other fire houses staffed during the summers, when people tend to take vacations and assist with existing vacancies throughout the county. Volunteers will be asked to cover more shifts inside their stations.
The new budget will go into effect Monday.
