After the sudden resignation of Council Member At-Large Mel Franklin in June, Prince Georgians will have the opportunity to choose another candidate to fill the vacant seat in an upcoming special election in August.
So far, thirteen people have filed their bids to run for the seat and it is shaping up to be a race to watch. Here’s a list of who’s running:
Jolene Ivey, Current Council Chair
Jolene Ivey serves as the current Prince George’s Council Chair and represents District 5. Jolene is coming up on the end of her second four-year term on the council.
Tim Adams, Mayor of Bowie
Tim Adams is the current Mayor of Bowie and made history in 2019 when he become Bowie’s first Black Mayor in its 138-year history. Tim has over 30 years of experience in business, government and philanthrophy.
Tamara Davis Brown
Tamara Davis is an attorney who specializes in wireless telecommunications. She is co-founder and CEO of an internet service company that provides high-speed broadband service to several, multi-state rural, underserved areas.
Gabriel Njinimbot
Gabriel Njinimbot is an entrepreneur with career experience that includes working as career experience includes working as an information technology professional and paralegal.
Michael Riker
Michael Riker is a former police officer who served 25 years in law enforcement.
Jonathan White
Jonathan White is a local citizen and Air Force veteran.
Angela M. Angel
Angela is a former delegate who represented the 25th District from 2015 to 2019.
Marvin E. Holmes
Marvin is a delegate representing District 23 in Annapolis.
Leo Bachi Eyombo
Ran for election to the Prince George’s County Council, At Large in Maryland in the Democratic primary on July 19, 2022.
Kiesha D. Lewis
Kiesha is a senior business and organization leader with almost 25 years of experience in the IT field and over 20 years of experience working for the U.S. federal government.
Judy Mickens-Murray
Judy is former Chair of the PGCPS Board of Education and has over 30 years of service with the federal government as a civil servant for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration as well as prior service on the Board.
Kamita Gray
Kamita is the President of BTB Neighborhood Coalition, an alliance of civic, citizens, homeowner, community associations and interested individuals located throughout Prince George’s Council Districts 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Isaac Toyos
Issac is a citizen of Temple Hills, MD and Army Reservist.
The special primary election is set for August with early voting being held from July 31 through August 5. Primary Election Day is August 6.
