County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has been elected to be senator for the state of Maryland after prevailing in a widely watched race against Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan.
Alsobrooks has also made history, becoming the Maryland’s first Black senator. Alsobrooks celebrated her victory Tuesday night at her election watch party in College Park with supporters and state politicians.
Alsobrooks defeated former Gov. Larry Hogan, earning more than 52 percent of the vote, according to Associate Press.
“We stand tonight united as one Maryland,” Alsobrooks told the crowd. “I will make your care my concern, your hope my focus and your dreams my work in the days and years to come.”
Alsobrooks’ campaigned strongly on abortion and reproductive freedoms this year and has made an emphasis on building a more equitable economy and stronger democracy.
Alsobrooks will succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin, who opted for retirement after this term.
