Between 2018 and 2021, the Bulldogs didn’t just play; they dominated, orchestrating a historic three-peat of conference championships and a deep run into the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. But lately, the roar in Prince George’s County has softened. After back-to-back losing seasons—the program’s first since 2011—the athletic department has signaled that it’s time for a renovation.
The architect being targeted for the job? A man who knows exactly what it takes to climb the mountain: Dawson Odums.
A Proven Winner Returns
Reports have surfaced that Bowie State is on the verge of finalized a deal with Odums, the veteran coach most recently seen at the helm of Norfolk State. While his four-year stint with the Spartans ended with a mixed 15-26 record, savvy observers know that Odums’ resume is defined by more than a singular chapter.
To understand why Bowie State is betting on Odums, you have to look back at his legendary run at Southern University. For nearly a decade in Baton Rouge, Odums was the gold standard. He compiled a 63-32 record, secured four SWAC West Division titles, and delivered a SWAC Championship in 2013. He wasn’t just a coach; he was a culture-setter—a North Carolina Central alumnus known for a “no-excuses” brand of football rooted in discipline and defensive grit.
The Turning of the Page
The move follows the departure of Kyle Jackson, a homegrown Bulldog hero whose 11-year journey with the program—as player, assistant, and eventually head coach—came to an end after a frustrating 3-7 campaign in 2025. While Jackson’s legacy as a championship-winning player is secure, Athletic Director Clyde Doughty Jr. made it clear that the university is “investing in football” to reclaim “sustained excellence.”
In Odums, Bowie State isn’t just hiring a coach; they are hiring a stabilizer. The Bulldogs’ recent slide wasn’t due to a lack of talent, but a loss of the identity that made them the CIAA’s measuring stick. Odums’ teams have historically mirrored his own playing days as an All-CIAA defensive lineman: they are tough, they are physical, and they are prepared.
The Road Ahead
The timing couldn’t be more critical. With National Signing Day looming on February 4th, the Bulldogs are eager to get their new leader’s boots on the ground. The mission is simple but daunting: return Bowie State to the top of the CIAA and, by extension, the national Division II conversation.
For Odums, this is a homecoming of sorts—a return to the CIAA where his journey began. For Bowie State, it’s a calculated gamble that experience and championship pedigree are the keys to unlocking a dormant powerhouse.
