For over four decades, a local sanctuary has kept the art of sewing alive in Prince George’s County. Founded in the 1980s by Ms. Barbara Cranford as The Sewing Center, now the Creative Stitching Center, this institution bridges generations. Amid the decline of home economics in schools, the center fills an educational gap, fostering self-reliance and creativity among all ages. Despite leadership changes and neighborhood awareness challenges, the center’s mission remains strong. From tote bag workshops to community Sit-and-Sew gatherings, we spoke with the team to discuss their roots, small business hurdles, and how Prince Georgians can help keep this treasure thriving.

Can you tell us a bit about your business and what inspired you to start your journey here in Prince George’s County?

The Creative Sewing Center, formerly known as The Sewing Center, was founded and operated by Ms. Barbara Cranford. Established in the 1980s, the Center has served the community for decades by preserving the art of sewing and inspiring creativity across generations.

For many years, the Sewing Center provided a welcoming environment where individuals of all ages and skill levels can learn to sew, strengthen their sewing techniques, and develop confidence in their creative abilities. Whether someone is threading a needle for the first time or refining advanced garment construction and quilting skills, the center offers opportunities for lifelong learning and personal growth.

As sewing and home economics programs have largely disappeared from public school curricula, The Sewing Center fills an important educational gap. It provides the community with access to a practical life skill that encourages creativity, self-expression, self-sufficiency, and entrepreneurship.

More than a sewing school, the Sewing Center is a place where friendships are formed, knowledge is shared, and creativity flourishes. Through instruction, encouragement, and hands-on experience, the center continues its mission of empowering individuals while preserving a valuable craft for future generations.

Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

When Ms. Barbara Cranford retired in 2023, ownership of The Sewing Center was transferred to Ms. Rahmia Henderson, who worked diligently to continue the school’s legacy. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen personal and business challenges, Ms. Henderson was no longer able to manage the school. During this transition, the school was renamed the Creative Stitching Center, reflecting a renewed vision while honoring the decades of sewing education that began under Ms. Cranford’s leadership.

Today, the Creative Stitching Center remains committed to preserving the art of sewing and providing a welcoming space where creativity, craftsmanship, and community come together. However, like many small community-based organizations, we face several significant challenges.

While the Creative Sewing Center has a rich history, its journey has not been without challenges. Our greatest challenge is awareness. Many residents in the surrounding communities simply do not know that a sewing school exists in their neighborhood. Although students continue to enroll, many participate only for a short time. Building a consistent student base is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the school and preserving this valuable community resource.

We are actively working to expand our presence through social media, community partnerships, local events, and word-of-mouth referrals. We believe that with greater visibility and stronger community support, the Creative Stitching Center can once again become a vibrant gathering place where children, teens, adults, and seniors learn practical skills, express their creativity, and build lasting friendships.

Sewing is more than a hobby—it is a life skill. It fosters patience, confidence, problem-solving, artistic expression, and even entrepreneurial opportunities. At a time when sewing is no longer commonly taught in public schools, the Creative Stitching Center fills an important educational gap by ensuring that this timeless craft continues to be accessible to future generations.

Our vision is simple: to preserve the legacy that began more than four decades ago while inspiring a new generation of makers, creators, and entrepreneurs. With the support of our community, local organizations, volunteers, and advocates, we believe the Creative Stitching Center will continue to thrive for many years to come.

The Creative Stitching Center is more than a place to learn sewing techniques—it is a creative community where friendships are formed, confidence is built, and talents are nurtured. Our goal is to inspire every student to discover the joy of creating something with their own hands while preserving a timeless skill for future generations.

What do you think is misunderstood about your business?

Sewing is much more than learning how to operate a sewing machine—it is an opportunity to discover creativity, build confidence, and experience the satisfaction of making something with your own hands.

Many people are surprised by the joy that sewing brings. There is a tremendous sense of accomplishment in transforming a simple piece of fabric into a beautiful quilt, garment, accessory, or gift. Every completed project represents patience, imagination, and personal achievement.

Sewing inspires creativity in people of all ages. Young children discover the excitement of creating something uniquely their own. Teenagers learn valuable life skills while expressing their individuality. Adults often find sewing to be both relaxing and rewarding, while seniors enjoy preserving traditions and sharing their knowledge with younger generations.

Although sewing has traditionally been associated with women, it is a skill that benefits everyone. Men and boys are increasingly discovering the value of sewing as a practical life skill, a creative outlet, and even a pathway to entrepreneurship. From clothing repairs and home décor to quilting, costume design, and custom creations, sewing opens doors to endless possibilities.

Beyond the projects themselves, sewing builds patience, improves problem-solving skills, enhances focus, and creates opportunities for meaningful friendships through shared learning and collaboration. It strengthens families as skills are passed from one generation to the next and fosters a sense of pride that comes from creating something by hand.

At the Creative Stitching Center, we believe that every stitch tells a story. Our mission is to ensure that this timeless art continues to inspire, educate, and enrich lives for generations to come.

What do you enjoy most about running the business?

One of the greatest rewards at the Creative Stitching Center is welcoming new students through our doors. Whether they are children learning to sew for the very first time or adults fulfilling a lifelong dream, each student brings enthusiasm, curiosity, and a desire to create.

There is nothing more rewarding than watching a student’s confidence grow with every stitch. We celebrate each milestone—from threading a sewing machine and sewing a first straight seam to completing a first garment, quilt, or other handmade creation.

The excitement and pride on a student’s face when they complete a project is truly priceless. Seeing them hold up something they created with their own hands reminds us why we do what we do. Those moments of accomplishment build confidence, inspire creativity, and often spark a lifelong passion for sewing.

Our students don’t just leave with finished projects—they leave with new skills, lasting memories, and the confidence to continue creating long after they leave our classroom. That joy is what inspires us to continue sharing the art of sewing with our community every day.

What is the absolute favorite part about operating and growing your business in PG County?

Our absolute favorite part of operating and growing the Creative Stitching Center is meeting new people and building meaningful relationships within our community. Every new student, family, and visitor brings a unique story, and we cherish the opportunity to get to know them.

As we teach sewing, we also learn from those who walk through our doors. We discover the talents, traditions, and dreams that make our community so special. These connections inspire us to create programs that reflect the needs and interests of the people we serve.

The Creative Stitching Center is more than a classroom—it is a gathering place where friendships are formed, ideas are shared, and creativity flourishes. We believe that every conversation, every class, and every completed project helps strengthen the fabric of our community.

Our goal is not only to teach the art of sewing but also to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued, encouraged, and inspired. We look forward to meeting each new student and continuing to grow alongside the community we are proud to serve.

For someone visiting or discovering you for the first time, what is the one service, product, or experience they absolutely must try?

If there is one experience we encourage everyone to have, it is making a small tote bag. This beginner-friendly project introduces students to essential sewing skills while giving them the satisfaction of creating something both beautiful and useful.

From selecting fabric to sewing the final seam, students learn how to measure, cut, pin, stitch, and finish a project they can proudly use every day. There is nothing quite like carrying a tote bag you made with your own hands.

The tote bag represents more than just a finished project—it symbolizes accomplishment, confidence, and the beginning of a lifelong sewing journey. It is often the moment when students realize, “I made this!” That sense of pride is unforgettable and inspires many to continue learning new techniques and tackling more advanced projects.

At the Creative Stitching Center, we believe every stitch tells a story, and for many of our students, that story begins with their very first tote bag.

What is the one major lesson, triumph, or piece of advice you’ve learned along the way that you’d pass on to another local entrepreneur?

If there is one piece of advice we can share with aspiring entrepreneurs, it is this: Don’t give up.

Building a business rarely happens overnight. There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments when you question whether you’re making progress. Success takes patience, perseverance, and faith in your vision.

Keep trying. Learn from every experience. Be willing to adapt, ask questions, and seek guidance from fellow entrepreneurs who have traveled the same path. Some of the best lessons come from building relationships with others who understand both the rewards and the challenges of running a small business.

Above all, never underestimate the value of outstanding customer service. Treat every customer with kindness, respect, and appreciation. Listen to their needs, celebrate their successes, and make every interaction a positive experience. Happy customers become loyal supporters, and loyal supporters become your greatest ambassadors.

At the Creative Stitching Center, we believe that every stitch, every class, and every student represents another opportunity to make a difference. We remain committed to growing, serving our community, and inspiring creativity—one person, one project, and one stitch at a time.
